11053 » Your Windows Server 2003 SP1 domain controller cannot register its SRV resource records with a DNS server if the 'Register this connection's addresses in DNS' option is disabled? (01-Dec-06)

When your domain controller is running Windows Server 2003 with SP1 (Service Pack 1) it cannot register its SRV resource records with a DNS server if the Register this connection's addresses in DNS option on the DNS tab of the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog is disabled.

In Windows Server 2003 SP1, the DHCP Client service registers the A record for a client computer and the NetLogon service registers the SRV resource records for a domain controller. In the original release version of Windows Server 2003, and in Windows 2000, the NetLogon service registers the SRV resource records regardless of whether the Register this connection's addresses in DNS option is enabled or disabled.

To cause the NetLogon service on the DC to register SRV resource records regardless of the Register this connection's addresses in DNS setting:

1. Open a CMD.EXE window.

2. Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:

net stop netlogon
REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters /V DnsUpdateOnAllAdapters /T REG_DWORD /F /D 1
net start netlogon
